Art has the power to transform.  Its power is felt in both the viewing of it and in the creation.  Through creativity one is able to adopt new skills and experiment with expression of inner feelings.  Creativity can encourage the adaptation of new coping skills, facilitate self growth, increase self-esteem and inspire a sense of control over one’s life.

I have been privileged to witness and be a part of many people’s healing journey.  It is not only beneficial for children; adults alike who engage in the process have found it to be helpful in exploration and expression. I have had first-hand experience in this, with plenty of my clients being adults.

What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy combines psychotherapy with expressive art techniques in order to accommodate a safe space for people to discuss and explore personal difficulties. Art Therapy can include any number of art mediums including paint, drawing materials, collage and sculpture. By engaging in art-making in the presence of an Art Therapist, people can express emotions, gain insight, adopt new coping skills, and increase self-awareness and self-esteem.

Does it work?

While Art Therapy is popular with children, persons of all ages can benefit from Art Therapy.

There is increasing research being performed by Art Therapists and clinicians all over the world attesting to the benefits of Art Therapy in aiding with personal difficulties in all realms. An increase in training programs, professional organizations and the inclusion of Art Therapists as Registered Psychotherapists with the Ontario College has given validation and recognition to this emerging practice.
